SINGING “Jesus, Remember Me” UMH #488
Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom

READING SCRIPTURE Job 14:1-12 (Common English Bible)
14 All of us are born of women,
    have few days, and are full of turmoil.
Like a flower, we bloom, then wither,
    flee like a shadow, and don’t last.
(Yes, you open your eyes on this one;
    you bring me into trial against you.)
Who can make pure from impure?
    Nobody.
If our days are fixed, the number of our months with you,
    you set a statute and we can’t exceed it.
Look away from us that we may rest,
    until we are satisfied like a worker at day’s end.
Indeed there is hope for a tree.
    If it’s cut down and still sprouting
    and its shoots don’t fail,
    if its roots age in the ground
        and its stump dies in the dust,
    at the scent of water, it will bud
        and produce sprouts like a plant.
10 But a human dies and lies there;
    a person expires, and where is he?
11 Water vanishes from the sea;
    a river dries up completely.
12 But a human lies down and doesn’t rise
        until the heavens cease;
    they don’t get up and awaken from sleep.

SINGING “Why Has God Forsaken Me?” TFWS #2110 v1,3,4
Why has God forsaken me? cried out Jesus from the cross as he shared the loneliness of our deepest grief and loss.
Jesus, as his life expired, placed himself within God’s care: “At our dying, Christ, may we trust the love which conquers fear.”
Mystery shrouds our life and death but we need not be afraid, for the mystery’s heart is love, God’s great love which Christ displayed.

PRAYING SILENTLY

READING SCRIPTURE Psalm 31:1-5; 15-16; 21-24 (NRSVUE)
In you, O Lord, I seek refuge;
    do not let me ever be put to shame;
    in your righteousness deliver me.
Incline your ear to me;
    rescue me speedily.
Be a rock of refuge for me,
    a strong fortress to save me.
You are indeed my rock and my fortress;
    for your name’s sake lead me and guide me;
take me out of the net that is hidden for me,
    for you are my refuge.
Into your hand I commit my spirit;
    you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.
My times are in your hand;
    deliver me from the hand of my enemies and persecutors.
16 Let your face shine upon your servant;
    save me in your steadfast love.
Blessed be the Lord,
    for he has wondrously shown his steadfast love to me
    when I was beset as a city under siege.
22 I had said in my alarm,
    “I am driven far from your sight.”
But you heard my supplications
    when I cried out to you for help.
23 Love the Lord, all you his saints.
    The Lord preserves the faithful
    but abundantly repays the one who acts haughtily.
24 Be strong, and let your heart take courage,
    all you who wait for the Lord.

SINGING “Wait for the Lord” TWFS #3049
Wait for the Lord, whose day is near.
Wait for the Lord, keep watch, take heart!

READING SCRIPTURE Luke 23:48-56 (The Voice)
48 The crowds of common people who had gathered and watched the whole ordeal through to its conclusion left for their homes, pounding on their own chests in profound grief49 And all who knew Jesus personally, including the group of women who had been with Him from the beginning in Galilee, stood at a distance, watching all of these things unfold.
50 Meanwhile a man named Joseph had been at work. He was a member of the council, a good and fair man, 51 from a Judean town called Arimathea. He had objected to the plans and actions of the council; he was seeking the kingdom of God. 52 He had gone to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53 He removed the body from the cross and wrapped it in a shroud made of fine linen. He then laid the body in a cavelike tomb cut from solid rock, a tomb that never had been used before. 54 It was Preparation Day—the day before the holy Sabbath—and it was about to begin at sundown55 The women who had accompanied Jesus from the beginning in Galilee now came, took note of where the tomb was and how His body had been prepared, 56 then left to prepare spices and ointments for His proper burial. They ceased their work on the Sabbath so they could rest as the Hebrew Scriptures required.

SINGING “O Lord Hear My Prayer “ TFWS #2200
O Lord, hear my prayer. O Lord, hear my prayer. When I call, answer me.
O Lord, hear my prayer. O Lord, hear my prayer. Come and listen to me.
