Devotional Cards: a Confession
By: Pastor Dave | March 23, 2025 | Discipleship, Lent, Pastoral Letter
Dear Minooka UMC Found Family,
Can I confess something to you? (I mean, it is Lent after all, a season for confession.) I don’t always have a plan. Further, I don’t always know what I’m doing.
Ok, that’s probably not a huge reveal. In fact, it might be pretty obvious. Still, seems important to admit. Part of that whole “walk humbly with God” thing from Micah we talked about a few weeks ago.
Today, I’m specifically thinking about these stacks of Daily Devotional Cards for Lent that sit on my desk. When we bought the ‘Everything [in] Between’ curriculum for the season, the Daily Devotional Cards were included. So we printed some. Each full pack has a card per day for the whole season of Lent. I didn’t have an actual plan for using them. They just seemed too good to pass up.
What are they like? One side asks provocative questions, such as:
“Have you ever received the message that you must work to earn your self-worth? What does your faith say to that?”
The other side offers a prayer by the Rev. Sarah A. Speed:
Sabbath-taking God, there are days when I rush around like the world depends on me, days where I work until my mind or hands turn to jello. I know that’s not what you want for me, but I hustle and bustle all the same. Teach me again that I do not have to earn my worth. Teach me again that it is good to rest. Teach me again that love is not conditional. Teach me again. Amen
See what I mean? They’re excellent. Super high quality. Engaging and lovely. So what to do with them?
Our Office Manager Melissa had the excellent idea to attach them to the Holy Week fliers we handed out at Senior Luncheon this week. However…not a ton of people took them. So those fliers are now available in our lobby. Plus, every bulletin this Sunday includes one of the cards. I really hope you take them home and use them to reflect and pray this Lenten season. Or give them away to someone in your circle of influence. Or use it as a way to invite someone to church or a small group. Whatever you do (or leave undone) with them, please, please don’t just leave them on the floor of the sanctuary. That would hurt my heart.
Plotting Goodness,
Pastor Dave
