A Prayer for Texas

By: Pastor Dave | July 19, 2025 | ,

Dear Minooka UMC Found Family,

It is natural and normal for us to feel horrified and even helpless when we learn of natural disasters like the devastating flooding in central Texas on July 4. However, when it comes to feeling helpless, allow me to quote a lyric from my favorite band: “that is not our fate…at least today.” I say that because of UMCOR.

UMCOR is the United Methodist Committee on Relief. Don’t let that “committee” part fool you. This is not a group of people sitting around a table endlessly debating carpet color. No, UMCOR is the disaster-response arm of the United Methodist Church. UMCOR is already at work helping in Texas through Early Response Team deployment, debris removal, and distribution of relief supplies.

If you want to make a financial contribution to aid relief efforts you may do so by clicking here. Or by writing a check made out to Minooka UMC with UMCOR in the memo. Remember, unlike any other organization, giving through UMCOR means 100% of your gift goes to onsite relief efforts. This is possible because all of UMCOR’s administrative and operational costs are funded through other means.

We can also join the Rio Texas Annual Conference in offering this prayer:

God of mercy and might,
We lift before You the people of the Hill Country, those along the Guadalupe River and beyond who face loss, fear, and uncertainty this day. Let Your peace flow like a gentle stream into every weary heart. Strengthen those who rescue and rebuild. Provide shelter for the displaced, comfort for the grieving, and hope for those overwhelmed by despair. As floodwaters recede, may Your Spirit rise up among us—A river of compassion, courage, and care. In the days ahead, remind us that we are not alone. You are with us, and we are called to be with one another.
In the name of Christ, our Rock and Redeemer, we pray. Amen.
